The River and Its Problems

Owens Creek is a very good freestone mountain stream, with diverse habitat and structure, and lovely surroundings. It holds brown trout over well, and has some natural reproduction. Much of Owens Creek is on private lands, and is open to fishing through the generosity of landowners. The state DNR people work hard to keep these private waters open, and of course anglers need to be respectful of the property and the surroundings. A few sections of Owens are posted, e.g., along Foxville-Deerfield Road. Look for posted signs and the DNR fishing signs.

Owens Creek’s most notable problem is that the water does get pretty warm in the dead of summer. John Mullican, DNR biologist notes, for example, that temperatures may peak in the upper 70s during a heat wave on a July afternoon. On a “normal” summer, peak temps will be in the mid 70s, and of course cooling occurs in the evenings. Because of this, it is best to fish in the early mornings and again in the evenings on this stream, as well as on most Maryland freestoners.
